New Bedford Arctic Whaling Disaster of 1871

About the Series

This series marked my return to the figurative narrative. My evolution from being a decorative painter to a declarative one continued with my America’s Guernica: Greenwood and Charity Ann: Gone! with these seven New Bedford Arctic Whaling Disaster of 1871 paintings. Three of which, have been acquired by the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The disaster involved a fleet of 33 American whaling ships. A change in the weather ice-locked the ships, crushing them. Twenty-two of those hailed from the Port of New Bedford. Many were abandoned, and sunk, and some were burned by the Inuit people.
