New Bedford Arctic Whaling Disaster of 1871

About the Series

The and Charity Ann: Gone! series marked the shift from being a decorative painter to a declarative one. It continued with America’s Guernica: Greenwood.  The New Bedford Arctic Whaling Disaster of 1871 paintings, three of which were acquired by the New Bedford Whaling Museum, depict the disaster involving a fleet of 33 American whaling ships.

A change in the weather ice-locked the ships, twenty-two of which hailed from the Port of New Bedford, crushing them. Many more were abandoned, sunk, and burned by the Inuit people.
