A Painter
Looking, remembering, and questioning
Ron Fortier’s work is shaped by a life lived across cultures, histories, and shifting identities. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he moved to New York City as a child, where early exposure to art, music, and a wide range of cultural traditions left a lasting imprint.
Raised between the worlds of his Portuguese mother and French-Canadian father, he experienced a rich convergence of influences—from European émigré communities to the Afro-Caribbean, African American, and Latino cultures that surrounded him during his formative years. These early encounters with difference, displacement, and belonging continue to inform the emotional and intellectual foundation of his work.
Fortier returned to the South Coast of Massachusetts for his early education, carrying with him a deep awareness of memory and cultural complexity. He went on to study art at Southeastern Massachusetts University and was later accepted into the MFA program at the University of Miami. His path as an artist, however, has never been linear. It has unfolded over time, shaped as much by lived experience as by formal training.
His creative life has moved between disciplines. Early work as a set designer for Boris Goldovsky of the Metropolitan Opera introduced him to the language of staging and atmosphere. This influence continues to resonate in the spatial and layered qualities of his paintings. This was followed by a long career in advertising, during which he developed a sensitivity to visual communication, composition, and the power of the image.
Only later did he return fully to painting, not as a departure but as a continuation. After retiring, Fortier relocated to Portugal, establishing a studio and exhibiting his work throughout Europe. There, immersed in a culture closely tied to his mother’s heritage, his practice deepened—guided less by outcome and more by process, intuition, and discovery. Following his second marriage in 2017, he returned to the United States.
Today, Fortier lives and works in the historic South Coast Massachusetts town of Fairhaven. His paintings reflect a lifetime of looking, remembering, and questioning. They do not seek to describe a single narrative, but to hold many at once—allowing traces of the past to surface, dissolve, and re-form. In this way, his work remains an ongoing exploration of what endures: the visible and the unseen, the remembered and the forgotten, and the quiet spaces in between.
