My Process
Socially Conscious Expression.
The work has moved between the discipline of raw abstraction and the weight of historical narrative. After years of working through a rigorous, non-objective language of gesture and movement—much like a musician practicing scales—a return to my own family history fundamentally shifted my studio direction in 2019.
Drawing from the story of an enslaved ancestor and the loss of her daughters, I began anchoring oral histories and historical social injustices back into my work. Today, bridging the internal logic of Abstract Expressionism with a direct, narrative figuration, my paintings confront difficult histories to find a more expansive, socially conscious expression.
